Magazine Report on ECDL 2009

August 20th, 2010

CILIP’s Update Magazine has published a report on ECDL 2009 on the recent (November 2009) issue. The report, conducted by Charlie Inskip (City University London), is thorough and highlights some of the most critical aspects of the scientific programme of the conference.

An excerpt from the conclusions of the article:

“The message of ECDL was clear. We need to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to digital libraries, looking to the past and the future. Practitioners, technicians, researchers and educators need to communicate on each other’s terms if digital libraries are to develop at the pace that is required by society.”

The front cover and the table of contents is available digitall, while the members of CILIP can have access to the full text. In the same issue a report on the work of the WEMIS workshop in the Soundbytes column, which discusses the latest developments in music information retrieval.

Online Gambling Looks Set For US Return!

April 11th, 2010

When there is any major change in any industry there are always a few smart companies that take advantage. Many feel that we are less than a year away from legalised online gambling in America. Having the Americans back in the online gamblng world would of course create yet another online gambling boom. It is a fact that American casinos missed out on the first gambling boom whilst many UK companies such as Virgin Bingo, Jackpotjoy Bingo and Bet365 Bingo cashed in. UK betting companies such as Ladbrokes, William Hill, Corel and even the likes of Virgin quickly established a presence online. US companies missed the boat as in America the laws did not class online gambling as legal.

With the anti gambling laws set to be repealed, perhaps as soon as this year, the door is opening for US gaming compaines to stake a claim in the online gambling market. It has gone virtually unnoticed that Harrah’s have not only launched thie own online poker site but last month they also launched Caesars Bingo and Caesars Casino. We feel that Harrahs are simply getting ready for legalised gambling in the states. UK online gamling operators such as Jackpotjoy and Virgin Bingo should be looking over their shoulders as the likes of Caesars Bingo are going to be very strong worldwide!

Will More People Play Online Bingo While The World Cup Is On?

February 14th, 2010

Will more people play online bingo while the World Cup is taking place? Well it’s a trickey question and you won’t be surprised to hear that some people think yes and others are thinking no.

The yes side of the arguement claim that there are loads women / non football fans out there that will be logging on during the World Cup to get away from the football. There are three games taking place everyday to get things started and that’s simply to much football for a lot of people. What better way to escape than to play online bingo while the wall to wall football is on downstairs.

The no side of the arguement claims that there is enough interest in football even from people who aren’t big fans of the game to cause a decline in the amount of online bingo being played. It seems likely that sites like  Bet365 Bingo will see an increase becasue they offer sports betting as well as online bingo but bingo sites such as Bingo Hollywood who are all about the bingo might see a decline in activity.

We won’t be able to tell till after the tournament and it will be interesting to find out if the World Cup will convert those non football fans into watchers!
